Navigate to M365 Copilot Chat

~2 minutes

Open a new browser tab and navigate to m365.cloud.microsoft/chat. Sign in with your Microsoft 365 credentials if prompted. Once signed in, you'll land on the M365 Copilot Chat home page where you can message Copilot or access agent-building tools.

Tip
Bookmark this URL — you'll be returning here as you build more agents in future labs.
  • Page won't load: Try clearing your browser cache or using an incognito/private window.
  • Sign-in loop: Make sure you're using your work or school Microsoft account.
  • "Access denied" message: Your license may need to be activated — contact your IT administrator for assistance.

Start a New Agent

~2 minutes

If the left sidebar is collapsed, click the sidebar icon in the top-left corner to expand it. In the sidebar, click New agent (you may also see this labeled as Create agent). This opens the agent builder where you'll describe what you want your agent to do.

Note
This agent builder is called "Copilot Studio Lite" — a simplified version built right into M365 Copilot Chat. If you don't see the New agent option, you may not have the correct license. Contact your IT administrator for help.

Describe Your Agent

~5 minutes

You'll land on the Describe tab where a conversational builder greets you. You'll also see template options like "Career Coach" and "Corporate Comms Crafter" — ignore these for now. In the text field at the bottom, type: Help me create an agent that customizes my stock bio based on selling opportunities. Click the send arrow or press Enter. The builder will ask follow-up questions to understand what you need — answer them naturally, as if explaining the task to a colleague.

The Describe tab lets you explain what you want in plain language — templates are available but optional

Tip
Be specific about what "customizing" means to you. For example: "Emphasize relevant experience, adjust tone for the client's industry, and keep it under 150 words."
  • Not sure what to say: Imagine you're asking a new team member to help with this task. What would you tell them?
  • Builder seems stuck: Refresh the page and try again. If the issue persists, try a different browser.

Enable Document Generation

~3 minutes

Before creating your agent, click the Configure tab at the top of the agent builder. Under Capabilities, make sure Create documents, charts, and code is toggled On (it may already be enabled). This setting allows your agent to generate Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files — essential for creating customized bios. You'll also see Suggested prompts that the builder created based on your description. Once you've confirmed the toggle is on, click the Create button to save your agent.

The Configure tab lets you enable capabilities and review suggested prompts for your agent

Tip
The suggested prompts give users quick-start options when chatting with your agent. You can edit, delete, or add new prompts to better match your use case.
Checkpoint
After clicking Create, you should see a success notification confirming your agent was saved. If you see an error, double-check that all required fields are filled in.

Save and Test Your Agent

~8 minutes

After clicking Create in the previous step, your agent is saved and you'll be taken to its home screen. You'll see your agent's name at the top, a message input field, and suggested prompts based on your configuration. To upload your bio, click the + button in the message field and select Upload images and files. Upload your stock bio document, then type details about a specific selling opportunity and ask your agent to customize the bio.

Note
You must click Create to save your agent permanently. If you skip this step or close the browser before creating, your agent will be lost and you'll need to start over.
Tip
Test with a real opportunity you're working on. The more realistic your test, the better you'll understand what your agent can do — and where it might need refinement.
Checkpoint
Your agent should produce a customized version of your bio that emphasizes relevant experience for the opportunity. If the output doesn't match your expectations, try the suggested prompts or give more specific instructions.
  • Don't see your agent: Make sure you clicked Create in the previous step. Check the sidebar under your agents list.
  • File won't upload: Check that your file is a supported format (Word, PDF, or plain text). Try a smaller file if the upload stalls.
  • Agent ignores the opportunity details: Be explicit in your request. Try: "Using the bio I uploaded, create a version tailored for [specific client/opportunity]."
  • Output is too generic: Add more context about what makes this opportunity unique, or edit your agent to refine its instructions.

Lab Complete!

You've built your first AI agent — one that can tailor your bio for any sales opportunity. The skills you practiced here apply to every agent you'll build: describing what you need, enabling the right capabilities, and testing with real scenarios.
